Things that were tonight that are unlikely to be repeated any time soon:
* an amazing puppet show by Corpus Callosum. Their live show is not to be missed. I heard some of their music and thought it was fine, but nothing to get excited about. Their live show is another animal entirely. stiltwalkers, playing glasses of water, outstanding musicianship & performance, and a big cup of Joy on hand to be had. An outstanding group to be sharing a night with the headliner.
* Jason Webley intentionally doing an utter trainwreck of a show. The for what songs he was going to play tonight were:
- No song he's played in the last year. Preferably songs he hadn't played for 2 or more years.
- brand new songs he's never played in front of people.
- Cover songs he's never played in front of people.
- Holiday songs.
With those rules in hand, we got to see him cover a Leonard Cohen tune (the name of which escapes me), "Nothing Compares 2 U" byPrince Sinead O'Connor, a Joni Mitchell cover, and the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York" to which he only mostly knew the words, but had a handout for the audience so they could sing along with him.
He also did a "song for every solstice" sung to the tune of Silent Night. I wish I could remember all the lyrics, but it began with, "Longest night / Shortest night" and proceeded to get progressively funnier as it covered both of them.
You're not likely to see Mr. Webley again for several months in Seattle, but when he comes through next time, it is very likely he will be touring as "Evelyn Evelyn" in support of that new record, coming out in March.
And that? it's going to be worth seeing. But in my short time seeing him, every show has something going for it and is worth experiencing. Here, have a preview, sort of.
ETA: last night my brain apparently transposed "I Would Die 4 U" and "Nothing Compares 2 U" in terms of who the performer was. I mean they both end in a number/U combination, so it's a totally understandable error, right?
